Via Alpina, Stage 50: Prinz-Luitpold-Haus - Oberstdorf

This trail is the 50th stage of the Via Alpina, a long-distance hiking route through eight Alpine countries that begins at the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus and ends in Oberstdorf. This route is part of the new Via Alpina trail, which was updated in April 2024 and now consists of 116 stages. The trail winds through the breathtaking landscapes of the Allgäu Alps, meandering along scenic ridge paths and through secluded high valleys. The route passes beneath towering peaks, crosses lush alpine meadows, and finally descends gradually to Oberstdorf, the famous German spa town and winter sports center. The trail offers a fascinating transition from the rugged rocky terrain of the high elevations to the gentler, green landscape of the valley floor. Overnight stays are planned in hotels or guesthouses in Oberstdorf; wild camping is prohibited. Water is available at the start near the hut and at some alpine pastures along the descent, but it is advisable to carry sufficient supplies before the ridge sections. The Prinz-Luitpold-Haus is accessible only on foot, while Oberstdorf is a major transportation hub with a train station (connections to Munich and Ulm) and an extensive regional bus network.
