Best trails in Muddus National Park
Muddus/Muttos National Park, Sweden's largest forest national park, is part of the Laponia World Heritage Site and offers untouched nature, old-growth forests, marshlands, bog islands and bog lakes. The park features dramatic landscapes such as steep rocky ravines and the 42 meter high Muddus Falls/Muttosagahtjaldak. In the southern part of the park, the Muttosälven river flows into the Stora Luleälv.
The national park has a varied bird and animal life, including loon, otter, bear and moose. Muddus/Muttos has been and still is an important area for reindeer and reindeer husbandry. Discreet traces of previous human settlement can be seen in the trees and foundations of houses built about 100 years ago.
Muddus/Mutto National Park is one of the quietest and few roadless forest areas in Sweden, making it a uniquely peaceful experience. It is part of the Laponia World Heritage Site designated in 1996, which also includes the Sarek, Padjelanta/Badjelánnda and Stora Sjöfallet/Stuor Muorkke national parks as well as the Sjaunja/Sjávnja and Stubba/Stubbá nature reserves and several other areas.
