The first National Park in Iceland, Þingvellir National Park is also the only Park in the country to also be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park features amazing geology, rich historical sites, and is only 45 min away from Reykjavik.

It leads you to the the Mid-Atlantic rift, which is the rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Alternatively, you can start this trail at the Visitor Center parking lot, on the other side of the loop, and extend it to Öxarárfoss Waterfall.

The path is well marked. All this not very far from the capital area of Iceland. The trail is short and pretty flat and it offers an out and back that is accessibel for almost everyone. Can be muddy in the rainy season.

The trail starts from the parking lot and takes the Sandhólastígur path in order to reach the lake. From there it goes to the fissure of Silfra, which is very popular for diving and snorkeling. Next to the tectonic plate boundary the path rejoins the starting point.
