The Cotopaxi Trek is an exciting hike in the Andean region of Ecuador that allows you to explore the spectacular landscapes surrounding the Cotopaxi volcano, one of the highest and most active volcanoes in the world. Ideal for adventurers, the trek crosses moorlands, valleys, and crystalline lagoons, with unique panoramic views. Due to its high altitude, its ascent involves a short but difficult hike and, at times, can also be complicated by inclement weather.

Rumiñahui is an extinct volcano 14 km northwest of Cotopaxi. Rumiñahui mountain is named after the Inca warrior Rumiñahui.
However, being dwarfed by the famous Cotopaxi, just across the Limpiopungo Lagoon, you have the same assurance of never being a popular international destination.

Nice walk around the lagoon that allows beautiful views: when there is good weather it is possible to see the reflection of the Cotopaxi volcano. It is recommended for those who want a quiet walk and take their time to appreciate the flora and fauna. Among the bird species that can be seen are the Andean teal and the Andean seagull.

Path from the Refugio de Montaña Cara Sur (most common route of ascent) to the Morurco peak, a mountain of volcanic origin, which is located at the southern end of the Cotopaxi volcano. Due to the characteristics of its terrain (in some places loose and steep) and the height, it is recommended to wear the appropriate attire. It allows panoramic views of the Cotopaxi, Antisana, Pasochoa and Rumiñahui volcanoes and it is possible to find flora and fauna typical of the Andean region.

Cotopaxi Trek
Was a fantastic day for visibility. This hike looks out onto Cotopaxi. Generally fairly moderate until you hit the Volcanic ash which is like walking in sand. Also a little scrambling at the top. Great way to acclimatize.
