From Wehlen to the Bastei and Amselgrund to Rathen

This route runs along the Malerweg trail. Starting from the town of Wehlen, it leads to the Bastei, where there is an excellent view of the surrounding sandstone formations and the opportunity to visit a medieval castle, the ruins of which still survive in the rock formations. The tour begins with a ferry crossing of the Elbe (check timetable and prices). Finally, right at the beginning, the route climbs steeply along the Schanzenweg. Once at the top, the route continues along the plateau with great views over the Stone Table in the direction of the popular Bastei. You can enjoy the fascinating surroundings from the Bastei bridge. However, it can get very crowded here, especially at weekends. The route continues through the Schwedenlöcher, a gorge-like ravine and down the many steps to the Amsellöchern. Finally, the route ends in the small spa town of Rathen, where no cars are allowed and the only access is via a small ferry that takes you back to the other side of the Elbe.
