Popular, panoramic hiking trail in the Bavarian Pre-Alps, Bavaria.
The route is quite challenging, but very varied and a real classic; hikers are rewarded with magnificent views of the Alpine foothills and its lakes as well as the Wetterstein mountains and Zugspitze towards the Alps. The starting point for this route is a paid car park at the Herzogstandbahn, from where the trail is marked with a yellow sign.
First head towards Herzogstand. The Herzogstandhaus (note opening times) is a popular excursion destination, even for non-hikers who use the cable car to get there. The Heimgartenhütte on the summit is a wonderful place to rest and if you want to jump into the Walchensee after the hike, you only have to cross the road once to get to the bathing beach. It is also advisable to bring warmer clothing in summer, as it can be chilly at higher altitudes. Depending on the time of year, this hike is moderately to heavily frequented.
