Popular, multifaceted circular hiking trail in the Bavarian Prealps, Bavaria. The Herzogstand is no ordinary mountain peak; it has royal roots. For a long time, it was a favourite destination for kings, including the infamous King Ludwig II. However, it got its name from Duke Wilhelm IV, who hunted in the area in the 16th century. The Herzogstand is located high above Lake Walchensee, the deepest Alpine lake in Germany. The hike begins in the beautiful village of Walchensee, near Kochel am See. There is plenty of parking here, but it can still get quite busy in summer. From there, a steady and steep climb to the summit awaits, but the majestic view is definitely worth it. On the way, you can stop for refreshments at the Herzogstand mountain inn (note opening hours and season). The entire route is beautiful, with constant views of the turquoise-blue lake. There is also a small waterfall along the way. Once at the top, you can see many lakes all around.
