Füssen - Foggensee - Alpsee

This hike connects the historic town of Füssen with two of the most beautiful lakes in the Allgäu, the Forggensee and the Alpsee. The trail usually starts in Füssen's old town centre and first leads to the shores of Lake Forggensee, an artificial reservoir created in the 1950s, which today serves as an important water reservoir for the Lech river. The route continues through shady mixed forests to the Alpsee, which lies picturesquely below the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Great crested grebes and swans can often be seen in the clear waters, while rare orchids such as the orchid bloom in the calcareous grassland. As the paths around the Alpsee can be rooty and stony in places, sturdy footwear is advisable. The route repeatedly offers impressive views of the Ammergau Alps and the royal castles.
