This route follows stage 6 of the Maximiliansweg, a long-distance trail through Germany and Austria, beginning in Unterjoch and ending in Füssen. The path descends into the Vils valley, tracking the river past Schranzschrofen and across the Austrian border toward Pfronten-Ried. It climbs the Zirmgrat ridge past the high medieval Falkenstein castle ruins, offering panoramic views of the Tannheim Mountains and the Füssen lakes before descending past the Alatsee and Faulenbach to Füssen....

This stage offers a lot of variety. If you initially hike comfortably along the Faulenbach, you will soon be going uphill to the German-Austrian state border. A short section secured with wire ropes takes you over the Zirmgrat to the Falkenstein, the highest castle ruins in Germany, from where you can enjoy wonderful views of the foothills of the Alps and the Tannheim mountains.
