The Horizontale takes place every year at the end of May or beginning of June - the challenge is to hike 100 kilometres in under 26 hours. The name comes from the hiking trails over the core mountains, the upper, middle and lower Horizontale. The route leads through mountains and valleys and offers wonderful panoramic views of the landscape. In even-numbered years it goes clockwise around Jena and in odd-numbered years anti-clockwise.
