Kelbra Reservoir Tour

This loop goes around the Kelbra dam, the largest lake in the region right at the foot of the Kyffhäuser mountains. The trail usually starts at the lido or the main dam and offers sweeping views over the water, which was originally dammed to protect the Helme river from flooding. The area is an important bird sanctuary where visitors can observe tens of thousands of cranes resting, especially in autumn. Reedbeds and salt-loving plants such as marsh samphire grow along the banks, while grey herons and great crested grebes can often be seen along the way. Comfortable shoes and binoculars for the three observation towers are highly recommended for the flat route.
