The route is named after the Hartfüssler, the miners who walked many kilometers every day from the north-eastern Saarland to the mines in the Neunkirchen area. Even though there is no mining in this region today, nor the necessity of walking to work, what remains are the piles of coal rising up in the landscape, the shiny winding towers and mine buildings and the old miners' paths of yesteryear. The Hartfüßlerweg largely follows the remaining former miners' paths.
