Virne-Burgweg

Certified premium hiking trail in the Eifel. The Virne-Burgweg leads through fabulously beautiful forests and heathland. A particular highlight is the mighty ruins of Virneburg Castle, which dates back to the 13th century. It also leads through the idyllic Nitzbach valley. The hike was voted Germany's most beautiful hiking trail in 2008 and offers marvellous Eifel panoramas, exciting mountain trails and plenty of variety. The trail starts at the car park in the centre of Virneburg in the district of Mayen-Koblenz. From the village hall, the trail first leads to a small chapel and from there up a narrow path through a meadow to the ruins of Virneburg Castle. It is nice to spend some time here and reminisce about knightly times amidst the defiant walls. The descent first leads down to Virneburg and then along the Nitzbach stream into the forest towards Hochwald. Finally, the Schafberg with its beautiful panoramic view of the Eifel is reached. The Virneburg Trail continues to Blumenrather Heide, from where the Nürburg, the namesake of the famous race track in the Eifel, can be seen. The next stops on the trail are the Brauberg and the refuge above Virneburg. The trail then descends into the Nitzbach valley across green meadows and with the opportunity to cool off in the Nitzbach stream. The Virneburg Trail ends at its starting point, the community centre in Virneburg. Here in Virneburg there is the "Zur Burg" inn where you can stop for refreshments after the walk.
