Moselsteig Stage 23: Kobern-Gondorf - Winningen

This route follows the 23rd stage of the Moselsteig and connects Kobern-Gondorf with the famous wine village of Winningen along a stretch steeped in legend and history. The hike first leads through the idyllic Mühlental valley straight into the supposed realm of the Tatzelwurm—a mythical creature that, according to legend, roams these parts. Passing ancient vineyards, you’ll reach the historic Niederburg, the ruins of the Oberburg, and the architecturally unique, late-Romanesque Matthias Chapel from the 13th century. After a challenging ascent along a winding path, the trail rewards you with a sweeping panoramic view that stretches all the way to the outskirts of Koblenz, before the route leads down along the spectacular steep-slope terraces of the “Winninger Uhlen” to the stage destination of Winningen. Accommodations are available in hotels and cozy winegrowers’ inns in Kobern-Gondorf and Winningen; wild camping is prohibited. Places to stop for refreshments can be found in both of these traditional wine-growing villages as well as at the wine taverns along the route. Transportation is ideally served by the train stations in Kobern-Gondorf and Winningen on the Moselle line (RE 1 / RB 81), with regular, fast connections to Koblenz and Trier; schedules and information can be found at https://www.vrt-info.de.
