Bienhorntal - Mühlental

This hike leads through two of the most picturesque side valleys of the Rhine near Koblenz. The start of the circular tour is at Koblenz Ehrenbreitstein railroad station. The trail first leads through the wild and romantic Bienhorntal valley, where the Bienhornbach stream has carved its way deep into the slate rock over the years. A particular highlight is the alternation between shady forest sections and open passages with sweeping views of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and the Rhine Valley. The route continues into the neighboring Mühlental valley, where historic mill buildings bear witness to the former artisanal use of water power. The wet valley meadows are an excellent place to observe grey wagtails and, with luck, fire salamanders, while the hillside forests are home to various species of woodpecker.
