The diocese of Essen has had its own pilgrimage route since summer 2018. Now you can make a pilgrimage across the Ruhr diocese on over 200 kilometers. Five marked, very different routes lead from the Sauerland, the Rhine, the northern Ruhr area or the south of Essen to the Essen Cathedral - or in the opposite direction.
The Bottrop - Oberhausen - Essen section offers an astonishing density of impressions that combine the past and the present: e.g. graffiti along the old Jacobi-Haniel colliery railway, the morbid charm of the park at the Oberhausen State Garden Show 1999 (OLGA Park) or the Emscherkunst sculpture “Sorcerer's Apprentice”, a curved power pole, set up in 2013, can be seen near the Ripshorst house. The route can be run as a day stage or in parts. Everyone is invited to discover the route as time, interests and their own physical condition allow - and perhaps to embark on an "inner" path in addition to the outer one. The pilgrimage route is marked with a uniform sign in both directions.
