Cross-country course Düsseldorf - Halde Haniel

The route explores a piece of industrial history around one of the highest accessible slag heaps in the Ruhr region. This route offers a constant physical challenge with varied elevation gain as the route passes through dense forests and along open gravel paths. There is a mixture of wide, well-maintained paths and some steeper, uneven sections that require a good basic level of fitness and sturdy footwear. The terrain consists of the overburden of the Prosper-Haniel colliery, the last active coal mine in the region until 2018. Along the ascent, you walk along the Way of the Cross with 15 stations displaying historical mining equipment and copper plaques. At the summit, 185 meters above sea level, hikers are rewarded with the art installation Totems by Agustín Ibarrola and an amphitheatre that offers a 360-degree view of landmarks such as the Bottrop Tetrahedron.
