Eichsfelder Grenzwegspuren "Green Belt"

Historical loop along the Green Belt, Lower Saxony. Where the inner-German border once ran, today, the gigantic nature reserve "Green Belt" provides a habitat for rare animals and plants - and an exceptional experience for hikers. The "Eichsfelder Grenzwegspuren 'Grünes Band'" hiking trail starts in Duderstadt. The hiking trail mainly follows old access roads of the former National People's Army, consisting of typical concrete slabs. Open spaces, meadows, wetlands, and dense forests characterize the landscape on both sides of the former death strip. We recommend a short detour to the Eichsfeld Borderland Museum, where fences and trenches can be marveled at many relics such as guard houses and towers. Overall, this border hike is well signposted, with a few exceptions. There are several rest stops along the way, some of which are covered, as well as places to shop and stop for refreshments.
