Popular stage of the "Goldsteig" long-distance hiking trail, Bavaria.
The Goldsteig runs below Haidmuehle (1 km) in the direction of the former Triftklause at the foot of the Dreisessel before it leads hikers to the next ascent. The view from the top of the Dreisessel rewards you for the very steep stretch in the last third. After a bite to eat in the shelter, one of the loveliest and most interesting Goldsteig sections lies ahead of the hikers: the Adalbert-Stifter-Steig leads over the block heap of the Steinernes Meer with huge slabs of rock and granite blocks. If the weather conditions are ideal and clear, you can even see the Alps from here. The Goldsteig crosses the Austrian border - then back in the valley - shortly after the Lackenhaeuser campsite. After approx. 8 km in Austria you cross the border stream to Bavaria, come to the hammer mill on the Gegenbach and climb the Hoepfelberg a bit up to today's Breitenberg stage.
