Via Alpina, Stage 52: Mindelheimer Hut - Schröcken

This trail is the 52nd stage of the Via Alpina, a long-distance hiking route through eight Alpine countries that begins at the Mindelheimer Hütte and ends in Schröcken. This route is part of the new Via Alpina trail, which was updated in April 2024 and now consists of 116 stages. The trail crosses the border between Germany and Austria and leads through the high-alpine landscapes of the Allgäu Alps and the Bregenzerwald. The route winds along steep grassy slopes and limestone ridges, offering spectacular views of striking peaks such as the Widderstein. The descent to Schröcken takes hikers through blooming alpine meadows and traditional Walser villages, known for their distinctive timber architecture. Overnight stays are planned in hotels or guesthouses in Schröcken; wild camping is prohibited. Water is available at the start near the hut and along the streams in the second part of the descent into the valley, but the ridge sections can be dry; it is advisable to fill up with water at the start. The Mindelheimer Hut is accessible only on foot, while Schröcken is well connected by regional buses heading toward Dornbirn or the Arlberg Pass. For more information, visit vmobil.at.
