These caves were already a refuge and repository for the Neanderthals 70,000 years ago, who withdrew into the caves of the Lone Valley to find protection from the weather and enemies. For the early humans of the genus Homo sapiens they probably also had a special mystical meaning, as evidenced by the impressive carvings made of mammoth ivory, in particular the unique lion man, an over 30,000 year old animal-human figure, found in the Hohlenstein.
