This hike leads from the Black Forest high plateau down to one of the region's most impressive natural monuments, the Sankenbach waterfall, which cascades over a karst wall in two stages. The route starts in Kniebis.
From the starting point, the trail first leads over the gentle ridges of the Kniebis before descending steeply into the Sankenbach valley. Visitors hike through dense fir and spruce forests. A particular highlight is the Sankenbachsee, an ice-age cirque lake at the foot of the waterfalls. Rare peat mosses and the carnivorous sundew thrive in the damp siltation zones. As the descent to the waterfall and the subsequent path along the cascades can be very steep, rooty and slippery when wet, sturdy footwear with a non-slip treaded sole and sure-footedness are an advantage.
