Trail reviews for Langtang National Park
Trail from Syabru Besi to Kianjin Gompa. Enchanting landscapes. The first part very closed valley, path close to the stream with continuous ups and downs. From Ghoda Tabela onward (3,000 m) it begins to level out and the valley to open giving views of these sumptuous mountains. From Kianjin Gompa to Kianjin Ri the trail is very intuitable and the ascent takes little time. Along the way you will find several hospitable tea houses (some commercial given the large crowds especially during summer periods). We completed the trek in mid-February and with the beautiful sunny days there was no snow even at 4300 m, but you know that in the mountains the weather is very variable. I recommend the use of wands to anyone, even the youngest Ironman. If you take snacks in town and feel like bringing and some water from the valley you will save something on overnight stays and stopovers, but still the prices are not that prohibitive even at altitude. You don't need a guide, just make a permit for Langtang National Park. The trail is well traveled and there is no need to book in advance, just stop where your heart tells you. In low season it is easy to bargain for free overnight stay in exchange for paying for food at the same facility.
My wife and I trekked the Langtang Valley at an average pace (with a porter) starting on Nov 26th and ending on Dec 1st. Day 1: Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel. Day 2: Lama Hotel to Langtang village. Day 3: Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa. Day 4: Kyanjin Gompa to lower Kyanjin Ri (there's a second higher viewpoint up at ~4,600M but we opted not to go as we felt that the effort/reward ratio wasn't there in terms of new views; I was also planning to do Tserco Ri the next morning). Day 5: Kyanjin Gompa to Tserco Ri early in the morning (just me with the porter) and then down to Langtang village in the afternoon. Day 6: Langtang village down to Syabrubesi (10 hr day - wouldn't recommend doing this in one day, unless you have above average pace; we did it because we wanted to save a day). Amazing trek overall. If you can, I'd recommend to just do the Tserco Ri/Cherkhuri viewpoint (almost 5000M) because it felt a bit redundant to do both Tserco Ri and Kyanjin Ri. The top of Tserco Ri had some ice patches so had to scramble a bit and took the alternative route coming down (which is longer, but dry and less steep, with nice/different views, would recommend if you have time). I'd say we went above average pace for Tserco Ri and it took us ~6.5 hrs round trip, including spending over an hr at the top. Daytime temperatures were still relatively comfortable when we went but night temps in Langtang and Kyanjin Gompa were cold/in the negatives (we requested extra blankets in the guesthouses).
