Beautiful, relatively short but challenging hike through marsh, reedlands, bamboo and forest. There were several muddy spots but the Rausu Shiretoko visitor center rents rubber boots for ¥550/pair. Not ideal footwear for a hike but at 3.6mi/5.8km, it’s tolerable and worth it, especially if you follow the rules and stick to the middle of the trail. (They also rent bear spray for ¥1100.) As others mentioned, there’s no parking and bus fare is ¥580 per person each way. The bus runs across the peninsula 4x/day each way. You can get a schedule at the visitor center.
