Best trails in Hossa National Park
Hossa National Park is located on the eastern border, in the north-eastern corner of Kainuu. The park's beautiful scenery is easily accessible and suitable for the whole family. Rock paintings evidence that the area has been inhabited since 10,000 years ago.
Julma-Ölkky is a canyon lake that formed during the Ice Age, along with the park's vast ridge valley. The park's flora and fauna are diverse. The lakes are rich in fish, and the forests are full of berries and mushrooms. The forests are home to cavity-nesting birds, such as the Eurasian three-toed woodpecker, and the river rapids are home to the white-throated dipper. The park also has stoats and weasels, otters and beavers, as well as moose and reindeer.
Hossa Nature Centre offers a range of services for hikers. The park has 14 lodges and five wilderness huts. Camping is allowed in the camping area of Lake Jatkonjärvi. Metsähallitus also has 12 rental cabins in and around the park. The Karhunkainalo camping area has cabins, semi-detached houses, and caravan sites.
The nearest railway station to Hossa National Park is in Kajaani, 170 km from Hossa. In the summer and early autumn, there are direct bus connections to Hossa, while at other times, there are bus connections to Peranka and Juntusranta.
