Best trails in Bosque Fray Jorge National Park
It was created on April 14, 1941 and is located in the Coquimbo Region, Limarí province, Ovalle commune. Its main object of conservation is the relict forest of Fray Jorge, which is located at 30º 30′ S, 71º 35′ W, in the mountain range of the Coastal Range known as Altos de Talinay. It is of Valdivian humid type, a sample of what was the Atacama Desert in the Quaternary period, in the last glaciation occurred more than thirty thousand years ago, when the forest was distributed to quite low latitudes. The permanence of this natural relic is explained by the coastal cloudiness that penetrates the highest parts of the Coastal Range (Talinay, Fray Jorge and Punta del Viento sectors).
This explains the presence of plant species typical of southern Chile. However, in the almost ten thousand hectares that make up the protected area it is possible to admire others typical of semi-arid zones.
It is bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean and to the south by the Limarí River. Its highest peaks are Mozambique Hill (560 m), Centinela Hill (556 m) and Punta del Viento Hill (667 m).
