Best partially-paved trails in Merzig

Popular loop trail in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park, Saarland. In 2007 the Bietzener Sonnensteinweg was inaugurated. The loop trail in honor of the professor and sculptor Paul Schneider includes a total of 12 sculptures. Sturdy shoes are an advantage, as the Sonnenstein hiking trail runs partly along forest and meadow paths. The starting point can be chosen flexibly. Depending on the type of arrival, for example, the Bietzen refuge, the church of St. Martin or the Fremersdorf train station...

The starting point of the hike is the church in Merchingen. Following the signs it goes past the inn "Zum Blütental" and then uphill for a long time to Galgenberg. A wooden cross was erected on the mountain in 1928 as a sign of Christian sentiment. The view sweeps far across Merchingen into the Saar Valley and across to the Lorraine plains.
