Best backpacking trails in Ruhpolding

This route follows Stage 5 of the SalzAlpenSteig, traveling from Ruhpolding to Inzell on a mountain stage that combines open alpine pastures, forest, and quieter high-country terrain in the eastern Chiemgau Alps. This route is stage 21 of the Maximiliansweg, a long-distance trail through Germany and Austria, beginning in Ruhpolding and ending at the Zwieselalm. The path departs the biathlon town of Ruhpolding, passing historic museums and a sixteenth-century hunting lodge before heading east through scenic mountain terrain toward the resort town of Inzell. This stage from Ruhpolding to Marquartstein comprises two of the most impressive mountain vantage points in Bavaria: the Hochfelln and the Hochgern mountains. The wonderful panorama makes up for the strain of the climb, which can in any case also be eased by the use of the Hochfelln cable car.
