Radtour Nr. 2 - Die Binnentour

Starting point: village square in Lemkendorf Lemkendorf is a typical example of the type of village that is common on Fehmarn, the so-called fortress village. This is a compact street village, in the centre of which the street widens into a rectangular square. The villages were originally surrounded by a low fieldstone wall. There were gates at the entrance and exit to the village (hence the name "Forta") so that cattle could be kept in the square at night. Street names ending in "-dor", e.g. Middeldor, indicate that there used to be a gate here. At the northern end of the village, the route leaves the village and leads along a scenic road towards Bisdorf as far as Vadersdorf. It is accompanied on the right by the Kopendorfer Au, the largest watercourse on the island. From Vadersdorf, a dirt track leads to Gammendorf, which is only good to cycle on in dry weather. Gammendorf, with its many stately farms, is a double village that has grown together from two village centres (Slavic village and colonist village). North of Gammendorf, a feeder road branches off in a north-easterly direction to the Niobe memorial, which commemorates the sinking of the training ship "Niobe" on 26 July 1932. A sudden squall caused the ship to capsize and 69 sailors drowned within a few minutes. The tour leads along meadows and fields on a quiet, idyllic route via Wenkendorf to Dänschendorf. On the section to Petersdorf, you should watch out for motorised traffic. Also watch out when crossing the Petersdorf - Landkirchen country road. The tour leads back to Lemkendorf via the village of Gollendorf and the Bellevue farm.
