Saar-Hunsrück-Steig Stage 18: Altlay - Blankenrath

This route follows stage 18 of the certified Saar-Hunsrück-Steig premium trail, connecting Altlay with Blankenrath on a scenically spectacular section. The hike begins dramatically with a passage through the Altlayer Schweiz (Altlay Switzerland) region, where the trail runs mostly along narrow paths and across bizarre slate rock formations that offer great views into the Hitzelbach Valley before merging into the Altlayer Bachtal. During the subsequent ascent toward Peterswald, the route passes a historic pilgrimage chapel. Before and after crossing the K 51 road, wide panoramic views open up before the path dives into the wildly romantic and lonely Peterswalder Bachtal, which is also characterized by striking slate cliffs. After a steady climb up to Schauren and crossing the B 421 highway, the trail finishes by leading through an open, scenic agricultural landscape to the destination in Blankenrath. Cozy refreshments and accommodations are available in Altlay, Schauren, and directly in Blankenrath; wild camping is prohibited.
