Tecklenburg Witches' Path

This scenic route through the Teutoburg Forest follows the legendary Hexenpfad, or Witches' Path. The adventure begins at the marketplace in the medieval town of Tecklenburg. From here, the path climbs and dips through the woods, visiting five unique stops marked by signs. Visitors can explore the ruins of the Tecklenburg castle, which was once the largest hilltop fortress in northern Germany. One highlight is the Wierturm, a brick tower built to honor Johann Wier, a physician who bravely spoke out against witch trials centuries ago. Families often enjoy the natural rock formations like the Witches' Kitchen, where local legends say magical potions were brewed. The trail continues to the Heidentempel, a dramatic sandstone rock with niches carved into the stone. While some stories suggest it was a pagan temple, historical records show a stonemason likely added some details in the nineteenth century to share the town's folklore. For a bit of quiet, the path leads to Roelants Grab, a tomb tucked into the rocks. The loop returns to the town center by passing the Bismarckturm and following the well-known Hermannsweg ridge trail. Because some sections have many roots and rocks, wearing sturdy shoes with good grip makes the walk more comfortable.
