To Mariawald Abbey in the Eifel Nature Park, North Rhine-Westphalia.
This route leads from Schmidt down to Heimbach and up to Mariawald Abbey. After descending via the monastery's "Stationenweg" trail, which is dotted with information boards, the route heads towards Schwammenauel, then along the Rursee and from "Eschauel" back to Schmidt. During the season from April to October, a shortcut can be taken by boat from Schwammenauel. Due to the steep climbs on the way to Mariawald Monastery and on the way back from Eschauel, a medium level of fitness is required. Mariawald Monastery is a favourite place for hikers to treat themselves to a refreshment in the form of pea soup.
