This route follows the 153-kilometre route of the Wittener Himmelfahrt RTF (cycle tour), a traditional organised cycling event. Designed for racing bikes, this tour is an endurance challenge. The route is almost entirely tarmac and follows public roads. Starting in Witten on the edge of the Ruhr region, the route takes riders southwards into the challenging, hilly terrain of the Ardey Mountains or the northern Sauerland. The difficulty is determined solely by the length and the significant metres in altitude.
