Pilgerweg Bistum Essen 4: Gelsenkirchen - Essener Dom

The diocese of Essen has had its own pilgrimage route since summer 2018. Now you can make a pilgrimage across the Ruhr diocese on over 200 kilometres of paths. Five marked, very different paths lead from the Sauerland, the Rhine, the northern Ruhr region or the south of Essen to Essen Cathedral - or in the opposite direction. The Gelsenkirchen - Essen section crosses the north-east of the diocese of Essen. It runs through the Gelsenkirchen-Hassel district, past large industrial plants and on to Gladbeck. From there it goes to the moated castle of Wittringen with its extensive parks and diverse leisure facilities. Further along the route, the Emscher Culture Park impressively documents the transformation of the industrial area. At Haus Ripshorst, the Gelsenkirchen - Essen pilgrimage route joins up with the Bottrop - Oberhausen - Essen section and from there runs along the same route towards Essen city centre and the cathedral. The route has no fixed (daily) stages. Everyone is invited to discover the route as time, interests and their own physical condition allow - and perhaps embark on an "inner" path as well as the outer one. The pilgrimage route is marked in both directions with a standardised sign.
