Nideggen Castle, built in 1177 by Count Wilhelm II of Jülich, is an imposing hilltop castle that played an important role in the left bank of the Rhineland for centuries. The castle was captured and largely destroyed during the War of the Geldrian Succession in 1542. Reconstruction began in the 20th century. Today, the castle houses a restaurant and the castle museum.
