Die gelbe Route: Moorklinkerstraße und Birkenalleen

Cycle past the Käseglocke, Barkenhoff and Niedersachenstein to the moorland clinker streets of the villages of Südwede, Westerwede and Worpheim. Old half-timbered farms lie away from the clinker-built streets. The houses stand on small hills, so-called terps. These used to protect against flooding. In the village of Waakhausen, the moorland regularly floated up before pumping stations and dykes prevented flooding. Today, the "Floating Land of Waakhausen" is a thing of the past. Even the name of the Totenweg (Path of the Dead) is a reminder of the times when Worpswede did not yet have its own church. Until 1759, today's artists' village belonged to the monastery church of Osterholz.
