Alpe Eschenbach - Rappenseehütte

This challenging high-altitude mountain hike takes you deep into the Allgäu Alps south of Oberstdorf. The trail starts at the idyllic Alpe Eschenbach in the Stillach Valley (near the Fellhornbahn valley station) and takes you on a strenuous climb to the highest lake in the Allgäu. The route is a challenging mix of steep serpentine paths, stony mountain trails and alpine grassy slopes. A central highlight is the Rappenseehütte at 2,091 m, one of the largest and most spectacularly located huts of the German Alpine Club, as well as the deep blue Rappensee lake, which is often surrounded by snowfields until early summer. The rugged rock faces of the main ridge are an excellent place to observe ibex, chamois and marmots. Due to the more than 1,100 metres of elevation gain, the route requires very good physical condition and sure-footedness.
