Starting point: car park at the festival hall (620 m) First ascend towards Kampenwand in the forest until you reach a ski slope. Continue on this towards Hirschenstein, past it and to the Kampenwand cable car (1460 m). Pass the Sonnenalm and Kampenwandhütte (1500 m) to the Steinlingalm (1448 m). Continue past the eastern summit of the Kampenwand towards Hochalpenkopf to start the return journey from there.

This route is stage 18 of the Maximiliansweg, a long-distance trail through Germany and Austria, beginning at the Hochrieshütte and ending at the Sonnenalm on the Kampenwand.
