AllTrails pledges a portion of March proceeds to public lands organizations
To know America’s public lands is to love them. The magnificence of Yosemite Valley, the otherworldliness of the Utahn desert, the serenity of Maine’s Atlantic Coast. These are some of the world’s most breathtaking places. And to enjoy them is to benefit from the work of thousands of federal US employees of the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and more. Their love of our public lands takes the humblest form: helping the millions of people who visit annually by giving them expert advice, maintaining thousands of miles of trails and millions of acres of wilderness, taking out the trash, and cleaning the restrooms. They’re public servants in the truest sense.
Recent federal layoffs and potential funding changes have put our public lands and the people who care for them at risk, at a time when outdoor recreation is more popular than ever. US National Parks saw 325 million visits and 1.4 billion visitor hours in 2023. At AllTrails, we’ve seen triple-digit traffic increases to many of our national parks pages. In Yosemite National Park alone, AllTrails users spent more than half a million hours on trails in 2024.
American public lands are heading into parks’ busiest season with reduced staff and fewer resources. Now more than ever, every one of us who plans to get out there this year has a role to play in helping take care of these special places. You can help public lands by:
- Checking the status of trails before visiting the park.
- Respecting trail rules and closures.
- Making sure your plans account for current and forecasted weather conditions, and the skill level of everyone in your group.
- Bringing the proper gear and sufficient water and food for your activity.
- Packing in patience, especially in popular destinations, and packing out everything else. Aim to leave the trail better than you found it.
Love of the trail is at the heart of everything we do at AllTrails. In the US, public lands and trails go hand in hand. To show our support for America’s parks and park workers, we’re donating $5 for every new AllTrails+ membership in the month of March to organizations that directly support federal public lands.
Our collective passion for the outdoors has helped steward US public lands for more than a century. We know that together we can continue to protect the places we value and the common experiences that made us love them in the first place.
