Some days, you get to see the sun rise and set from the trail. Then wake up there and do it all over again. AllTrails Peak is made for those days.

Trips like these once took hours to plan. Not anymore. Peak now offers advanced tools for backpacking, helping you build a multi-day route and customize every mile. You’ll plan your trip with extensive guidance from our trail experts and AllTrails’ global community of explorers. Within minutes, you can map and personalize your trip all in one place.

Here’s how:

  • Our custom routes feature helps you transform your vision for a multi-day adventure into the perfect route. Use it to create segmented routes based on an existing AllTrails route or one you draw from scratch. Add campsites and track daily mileage needed to achieve each part of the trip. Available on desktop for all members, and in the app for Peak members.
  • Now in beta on desktop and coming soon to the app, the route assistant in custom routes helps you build your multi-day plan, suggesting elevation gains and daily mileage based on your preferences. It describes each day so you know what to expect from start to finish. Available with AllTrails Peak membership.

From Reddit comment to real-life feature
“Our team knows from experience that the planning stage of a backpacking trip can often be the hardest part,” said Billy Yarosh, the AllTrails engineer who led route assistant development and is an avid backpacker himself. That pain point was hard for him to ignore, especially when he came across a Reddit post asking for the best backpacking route on Mt. Hood in Oregon. Drawing on AllTrails’ extensive trail insights and his own backpacking expertise, he and his team built the assistant to turn what once took hours of trip planning into a smart, day-by-day itinerary. It’s AllTrails’ most innovative backpacking feature yet. And as for that Mt. Hood route? Easier to plan than ever.

Try it out
  • Once the route’s mapped, use waypoints to further plot key stops along the way. Label and drop water sources, resupply spots, bail-out points — whatever you need — so your map reflects a specific plan. For more inspiration, see waypoints shared by fellow AllTrails members. Available to all members.
  • AllTrails Peak members can use a variety of map overlays, including slope angles and U.S. public lands, for enhanced planning. Toggle between them to better understand the terrain and trail conditions. Save and download your route so you can navigate with it once you’re on the trail, with or without cell service. Print your full map from AllTrails, complete with waypoints, as a backup. Available with AllTrails Peak membership.

However you like to plan, AllTrails Peak gives you the flexibility to build a backpacking route your way. From fine-tuning each day’s distance and campsites to navigating confidently in the backcountry, Peak helps backpackers spend less time juggling tools and more time getting outside.
