Trail reviews for Mount Olympus National Park
Beautiful hike, and super cool to be on Mount Olympus if you're a fan of Greek mythology. Coming from North America, we weren't sure how the difficulty rating compared or how challenging the scramble would be. We hiked from Prionia to Scala in one day, starting at 7 and ending at about 4, with a half hour break at the refuge. We were both quite used to longer 7+ hour hikes in North America (Rockies, Wasatch) and this hike was quite comparable. The trail is very well marked, and reasonably busy. While we did not do Mytikas, it would definitely be important to have a helmet there based on the number of people and potential rock fall. Apparently it is a fairly vertical climb that takes a solid hour. You can buy water at the refuge, but past that there is no water on the trail. The refuge can also give you an update on wind conditions and temperature at the peaks. We went to the store 55 Peaks in Litochoro, and Monica was awesome - we rented poles, and she marked out the different paths on a map for us. Depending on the time of year, your hiking speed, and if you're planning on multiple peaks, bring a headlamp. We were told the average completion time is 9-15 hours. You get decently high on this hike, so bring warm layers - for reference, it was ~20c at the bottom and closer to 6c at the top, plus a good amount of wind.
Final ascent to the top of Mount Olympus. Amazing
Day 1 of Mount Olympus summit ascend. Scenery was amazing from thick natural forest rising up to the snow line. Mountain goats on the trail kept us amused for several minutes as they bounded across the terrain as we clambered forward.
