Popular, picturesque hiking route in the southern Harz Mountains, Thuringia.
This route leads to the Neustadt dam and over the Schloßberg up to Hohnstein Castle. The Neustadt dam is the oldest dam in Thuringia. The Krebsbach is dammed here and its water is used to supply drinking water. The trail leads along the eastern bank of the reservoir. Then follow the signposts to Hohnstein Castle. This was built in 1120 by Konrad von Sangerhausen and became the ancestral seat of the Counts of Hohnstein. Under Count zu Stolberg, the castle was expanded into a Renaissance castle and was conquered and burnt down by the Electorate of Saxony during the Thirty Years' War. In the cosy castle inn, you can reflect on this beautiful hike over a hearty snack.
