Schwentine Small Circular Route

This hike leads through the unspoilt valley of the Schwentine, one of the longest rivers in Schleswig-Holstein. The circular route starts at the hikers' car park at Oppendorfer Mühle. The trail runs directly along the winding banks of the river and crosses shady deciduous forests. A particular highlight is the Oppendorfer Mühle, a historic site where the water of the Schwentine has been utilised for centuries. Kingfishers, grey wagtails and grey herons can be observed in the alder swamps close to the banks, while trout can often be seen in the clear water. As the paths right by the water are sometimes narrow and can be slippery or muddy in wet weather, sturdy casual shoes or light hiking boots are recommended.
