Kammweg Erzgebirge-Vogtland Stage 1: Geising - Holzhau

This route follows stage 1 of the certified "Kammweg Erzgebirge-Vogtland" premium trail, connecting Geising with Holzhau on a challenging yet immensely diverse section. The hike begins directly at the Geising train station and immediately climbs up the Geisingberg hill. Passing the Altenberg Mining Museum and offering views of the impressive Altenberg Pinge (a massive mining collapse crater), the trail continues to the 905-meter (2,969-foot) Kahleberg, the highest peak in the Saxon Eastern Ore Mountains, which treats hikers to panoramic views as far as Dresden on clear days. After hiking along the ridge through a beautiful heath landscape and past the Wüsten Teich pond, the path climbs toward Germany's highest-altitude aronia plantation right on the Czech border. Walking along soft meadow paths and through a charming wedding avenue (Hochzeitsallee), you will tackle one last steep climb up the Steinkuppe after the Teichhaus before reaching your well-deserved destination in Holzhau. Cozy, hiker-friendly accommodations and traditional inns for a hearty meal are available directly in Geising, Altenberg, and at the stage destination in Holzhau; wild camping is prohibited. Since this first stage is quite long at 24 kilometers (15 miles), arriving the day before is highly recommended.
