Regenstein Castle and Great Sand Caves

This adventurous circular route leads through the northern Harz foothills near Blankenburg to two of the region's most extraordinary geotopes. The trail opens up the extensive heath sandstone area and runs along an exciting mix of sandy forest paths, narrow rock paths and historic sunken paths. A central highlight is the imposing Regenstein castle ruins, a fortress carved into the massive rock, as well as the Great Sand Caves in Heers – an almost surreal place with white, fine-grained sand and rugged rock faces. The route requires a good level of fitness due to the sandy passages and the ascent to the castle, but is particularly popular with families and photographers due to the high density of experiences.
