Altastenberg Loop: Kahler-Asten Weg As4

This classic high-altitude tour leads through the "roof of the Sauerland" and connects the highest church village in the region, Altastenberg, with its most famous peak. The trail opens up the vast high heath landscapes of the Rothaargebirge and runs along a varied mix of well-developed hiking trails, natural paths and sections of the famous Rothaarsteig. A central highlight is the summit of the Kahler Asten (841 m) with its striking viewing tower and the high heath area, which is significant throughout Europe and can be climbed as an option. This special vegetation zone is an excellent place to observe woodlarks, mountain meadow plants and, in late summer, the purple heather blossom. The route has moderate gradients and, thanks to its exposed location, offers almost continuous, far-reaching views across the "Land of a Thousand Mountains".
