Idyllic, varied circular hiking trail near Rheinbach, North Rhine-Westphalia.
On the 9.8 km circular trail through the species-rich forests of the "Rheinbacher Wald" and "Tomberg" nature reserves, you can discover rare, heat-loving plants such as black nettle and speierling. You will also pass the forest chapel and the "Black Cross". A few medium climbs are always rewarded with beautiful views. The highlight is the castle ruins with a view from the summit of the Tomberg over the Drachenfelser Ländchen and the Kottenforst to the distant Siebengebirge. High on the volcanic cone of the Tomberg, Count Palatine Hermann built his manor house around the year 900. Today you can see the restored remains of the keep and the castle well, which was once 46 metres deep. After a chequered history, robber barons lived on the Tomburg in the 14th century, raiding trade transports on the Aachen-Frankfurt army road from here.
