Den Rhein entlang nach Grieth

Route 11: Along the Rhine to Grieth Length: approx. 51 km Requirements: family-friendly, tarmac and paved cycle and hiking paths. Scenery: Rhine, lakes, villages, ferries Start/Finish: Tourist Information Xanten At the tourist information centre, turn right through the middle gate onto Klever Straße and continue until you reach the Klever Tor. Now turn right over the Nordwall and at the end of the road turn left to the roundabout and straight on along Wardter Straße to Xanten harbour. Before the harbour, continue along the left bank of the Südsee towards Wardt. Cross the bascule bridge and cycle to Xantener Nordsee. Continue along the right bank until you reach the Rhine dam. Follow this for a while to Obermörmter, where you leave the Rhine embankment via Hoher Weg. Continue right along Papenweg to the church in Obermörmter. Before the church, turn right again onto Husenweg (Rheindamm). Continue left for a while until you reach Reeser Schanz. Turn left there and cycle to the junction of Reeser Schanz/Rheinstraße. Turn right onto Rheinstraße. Follow this road for approx. 2 km, pass under the bridge and then turn right over the Görtze Woy towards Rheindamm. The route takes you along the Rheindamm to behind Haus Hönnepel (Griether Straße), where you turn right along Griether Straße to the roundabout and then right again towards Grieth. Before Grieth, turn right into Schuldamm and immediately right again into Schifferdamm. Before the Zum Deichgräf restaurant, turn right downhill and immediately left again under the subway to Griether Markt. At the market, turn right into Legestraße and continue along Kirchhofstraße to Rheinuferstraße. Then turn left towards Wissel. Cycle through Wissel and after approx. 1.5 km turn left into Zum Wisseler See. Follow this road for approx. 1.5 km and then turn right into a forest path. At the end of the path, cross a small bridge and cycle to Gerd-Jansen-Platz in Kalkar. Turn left there and then immediately right again into Kesselstraße. At the end of Kesselstraße you reach the market. Now turn left and cycle past the town hall in the direction of Kalkarer Mühle. At the mill, cross a small bridge and cycle along the stream on the right until you reach Oyweg. There the path turns left and you follow the Oyweg to Appeldorn. There you cross the Reeser Straße and follow the Via Romana and the NiederrheinRoute via Marienbaum, Haus Balken, Düsterfeld, Kloster Mörmter to Xanten. The route to the tourist information centre is signposted in the town.
