Lichtenstein Castle Round

This circular route in the Swabian Alb combines geological features with architectural sights. The trail leads to the Gießstein and Breitenstein rock formations and the famous Lichtenstein Castle. The route runs along forest paths and near-natural trails along the Albtrauf. There are differences in altitude, particularly on the ascent to the plateau and around the castle complex. There are views across the Echaz valley and of the remains of the former medieval fortress. Lichtenstein Castle lies at an altitude of 817 metres (2,680 feet) and is often referred to as Württemberg's fairytale castle. Count Wilhelm von Württemberg had the building erected in 1842, inspired by Wilhelm Hauff's novel of the same name. The castle is enthroned on a steep rocky outcrop on the site of a much older castle. Near the route is the Nebelhöhle, one of the oldest show caves in the region. The nature of the terrain includes steep sections with roots and stones typical of the limestone plateau of south-west Germany.
