The route leads around the Jungfern Weiher near Ulmen and the Ulmener Maar. The Jungfernsee was once used by the lords of Ulmen Castle as a fishing lake until it silted up. After the former maar was used for peat cutting for a while, it was decided to flood the area again in 1942. Today, the Jungfernweiher is a nature reserve together with the Ulmener Maar. If you are interested in the explosive past of this region, you will find a wonderful breakdown in St Matthias Church. As the slopes of the Maar basin are covered in beautiful forest, the region is perfect for a walk. A detour up to the medieval castle ruins, from which crusaders once set out on their battles, is highly recommended.
